List of Currencies Used by Different Countries

various currencies and countries

There are 195 countries and 180 current currencies across the world, as recognized by the United Nations. Before the introduction of currencies, exchange of goods and services (Barter system) was used. The barter system gradually faded and a better, measurable and standard means of exchange was needed.
The Cowrie shells common in East Asia and Africa was later adopted. At a point in time, people used gold, silver etc as means of exchange. As the year went by, the coin system was introduced then the Chinese innovated as they were the first to use paper currency.
According to scholars, the history of currency was traced back into human prehistory, 10,000 years or more ago.
The British pound is the world’s oldest currency that’s still in use, dating back to the 8th Century. The newest currency in the world is the South Sudanese Pound, made official on July 18, 2011.
